Plus, it’s also filled with apple cider vinegar, which helps clarify my roots even more while also reducing scalp irritation. Regular shampoos are often made with creamy moisturizers meant to soften and condition your hair. However, these ingredients may not work well for oily hair since they can leave behind a creamy residue or film. Shampoos that are specifically formulated for oily hair shouldn’t leave behind any residue. What distinguishes shampoo for hair growth is the inclusion of certain ingredients that are known to promote scalp and hair health, says Levine. These ingredients are intended to prevent breakage — thereby allowing the hair to grow longer — while also nourishing the scalp and hair follicles to support growth.

Runner-Up, Best for Dry Hair

In this blog post, I'll share my firsthand insights into what causes oily hair, tips to maintain oily scalp and greasy hair and explore the importance of choosing the right shampoo for your specific hair needs. There are many shampoos out there that work beautifully with oily hair, but we think the best of the bunch is the Ouai Detox Shampoo. It offers the perfect balance between cleansing away impurities and oils while keeping the hair in excellent shape. This balanced, deep-cleansing shampoo is our overall top pick for those with oily hair. It’s a perfect blend between clarifying and hair-fortifying, which is generally what best benefits oil-prone hair. The Balance Conditioner is a lightweight formula that improves softness and increases volume.

How do I stop getting greasy hair?

This clarifying shampoo is made with apple cider vinegar to help gently cleanse oily scalps, and it’s designed for use on all hair types. But it’s the addition of hydrolyzed keratin that may strengthen weak strands while also adding shine and smoothing frizz. The amount of shampoo you use for oily hair should be just enough to create a gentle lather. You don't need a large amount, as excessive shampoo can strip your hair of its natural oils and potentially lead to increased oil production. Start with a quarter-sized amount of shampoo, and adjust as needed based on your hair's thickness.

L'Oréal Paris EverPure Moisture Shampoo

You don’t have to worry about your hair staying too dry though, because this R+Co shampoo adds moisture back into the strands. It does this with ingredients like babassu seed oil and glycerin, the latter of which acts as a humectant to hold onto the additional moisture. Instead, wash after a long day at the beach with the Bed Head by TIGI Re-Energize Shampoo. The shampoo wipes away all signs of the beach and leaves your hair with texturized beachy hair. No matter which causes you to attribute your oily hair too, ahead see the 12 best shampoos for oily hair. GK Hair Balancing shampoo’s formula is a little more creamy but works great for anyone with an oily scalp and frizzy hair.

Desert Essence Lemon Tea Tree Shampoo

Many testers found it blitzed product residue that clung to roots, while boosting shine and volume. Hair was easier to detangle after washing, with many enjoying added bounce. Our panel reported deeply cleansed hair and some also noticed added bounce and volume. Testers agreed, with the majority appreciating how purified their hair and scalp felt. Acting as a weekly treat for tresses, this shampoo is designed to remove product build-up, pollutants and any residue to give hair a spring clean.

Just make sure you don’t over-use the product as it can cause build-up and irritation. This shampoo magically strips roots of grease while hydrating your ends, so you never have to compromise. If there's one thing tea tree oil is good at, it's cleansing whatever it comes in contact with. This shampoo, which is also packed with mint and lavender, will leave your strands way cleaner than it found them.

Growing older, postpartum, and hormonal imbalances can all lead to a decrease in hair volume, just to name a few. In order to tackle this, we looked for shampoos that strengthen strands and repair damage. Throughout our test, we were thoroughly impressed with Ouai Detox Shampoo. Chicago-based hairstylist Nick Stenson also recommends steering clear of silicones. "Silicone tends to coat the hair, making it heavy, which counteracts the benefits of the volumizing," he explains.

But the real standout ingredient in this budget-friendly shampoo is rice water. Researchers have discovered that rice water may improve hair elasticity — thus making it less prone to breakage. Additionally, inositol — one of its components —  can penetrate damaged hair, repairing and strengthening it from the inside out. This shampoo also features quinoa protein, which contains all nine essential amino acids. Studies have found when hair is lacking in these amino acids, the structure tends to suffer, leading to damage and breakage.

Best for irritated scalps

It does include added fragrance, so it might not be an ideal choice for those with sensitivities. With so many shampoos on the market, it can be hard to know which one is best for your hair concerns. Ultimately, choosing the best shampoo comes down to your specific hair and scalp needs. For example, anyone who always has greasy hair should look for a shampoo that balances the oils at their roots. And people who regularly dye their hair will need a shampoo that’s safe for color-treated strands. In case you’re wondering, sebum is a natural oil that is continuously produced by your scalp.

Use the Suave Professionals Sulfate-Free Cleansing Shampoo to remove any product build-up and impurities. Once you rinse and dry, your hair feels soft and full of moisture that fights off any frizz. The Amika Sexture Texturizing Shampoo is one of the best shampoos for oily hair that craves a beachy texture and lasting volume. It's a unique blend of ingredients – kaolin clay dives deep to cleanse dirt and excess oils, while zeolite keeps frizz at bay and boosts your hair's volume. With this gel shampoo, you can enjoy the beachy look and long-lasting freshness right after your shower.

Of course, if you get highlights at every salon visit, the peroxide will cause damage to the hair shaft. You'll want to opt for a shampoo that addresses this or one with pigments to counteract brassy tones caused by things like chemicals in unfiltered shower water. Using a hydrating and repairing shampoo like the Vegamour HYDR-8 Shampoo can be a game changer when it comes to hair's appearance post-drying. Rich in the brand's beloved vegan silk bonder called Karmatin, the whole HYDR-8 collection works to nourish hair immediately and over time without weighing it down.

Enter Living Proof’s Perfect Hair Day Triple Detox shampoo, which is color-safe and formulated to eliminate build-up from pollution, products, and hard water without stripping strands. It contains activated charcoal to absorb oil, as well as anionic polymer and a gentle surfactant blend to remove buildup. This is not your everyday shampoo, and it should be reserved for those days when you have the time to really indulge in self-care. Formulated to break down oil and product build-up, this deep cleanser immediately lifts away all impurities from your scalp for a superior clean, allowing you to start the week with a fresh slate and even fresher hair. It's a fantastic shampoo for those with thinner hair that easily gets weighed down with heavier products.

Check out our guides to the best shampoo bars and scalp issues and how to treat them. "For example, coal tar (a common ingredient in anti-dandruff shampoos and conditioners) isn't suitable for light-colored hair due to the risk of discoloration," explains Han. "For people with fine hair, I generally suggest products without heavy ingredients that might make the hair look more flat and limp." One thing worth noting is that if you already have super dry hair, you may want to follow this up with an extra-rich conditioner or mask, as it can be a tad drying. That's pretty standard for any shampoo made for thin hair, though — these formulas don't tend to contain some of the richer oils that may weigh thinner strands down. “First and foremost, I love the shape of this shampoo bar because it fits great in my hand and doesn’t slip,” says NBC Select updates editor Mili Godio.

After using this shampoo, your hair will feel voluminous, smooth, and tangle-free. And the subtle scent of grapefruit and oatmeal adds a refreshing touch to your hair care routine. As a hairstylist, I wholeheartedly recommend it as the best overall choice for clean, nourished, and shiny hair. Sebastian Dark Oil Shampoo is a lightweight, potent solution designed for clean and shiny hair. Formulated with nourishing ingredients like Argan Oil and Jojoba Oil, it effectively combats excessive oiliness without weighing hair down. While Briogeo does recommend this product for irritated scalps, we’d urge some caution since both physical exfoliation and essential oils can be too much for sensitive skin.

Best shampoo bar for curly hair: Ethique Curl Defining Solid Shampoo Bar

Josh Rosebrook's shampoo is formulated with aloe vera, gentle natural cleansers, and advanced herbal infusions to cleanse and balance. “If you have an extra oily scalp and must wash hair daily, I recommend this gentle two-in-one shampoo, which won’t dry out your hair,” suggests Rose. It’s good to look for shampoos with ingredients that will replenish moisture, such as hyaluronic acid, shea butter, argan oil or glycerin. And to control oil or keep the scalp balanced, consider a cleanser that contains ingredients like salicylic acid or apple cider vinegar.

Grease got you down? Here's what to use.

These shampoos ward off excess oils and will instantly revive your dull, lifeless strands. Doing this can trigger your pores to generate even more oil as a result, which only perpetuates the cycle. If you go through hair products quickly, this supersized shampoo and conditioner set is guaranteed to keep you going for longer.

Best Shampoo for Oily Scalp

It's our best overall pick because it heals damage and hydrates dry strands. But if you need something more affordable, the L'Oréal Paris EverPure Sulfate-Free Moisture Shampoo is a budget-friendly option that's still very hydrating and cleansing. These shampoos are lightweight and are formulated to give you a deeper cleanse.

That said, the formula does include sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), the gentler of the two sulfates, to help deep clean the dirt and grease from your hair. And the complement to the juice-inspired shampoo above is this smoothie-inspired conditioner. It has all the same ingredients to balance oil, plus it's designed to leave your hair softer and smoother. It contains pyrithione zinc to eliminate dandruff, control the appearance of flakes, and calm the scalp.

Team Byrdie loves this conditioner because it's like a healthy smoothie for your hair. Taking a cue from those active ingredients, the juice bottle-inspired container and sunny yellow hue will surely make you smile. Inside this cheerful mint-green bottle is a clinically backed bond-repair conditioner that provides a much-needed boost to dry, damaged, or over-processed hair. It's spiked with the brand's proprietary blend of plant-based proteins and natural butters to nourish and strengthen hair from root to tip. Those with damaged, dry, or tangle-prone curly hair will appreciate how this slick conditioner moisturizes and smooths with avocado and argan oil.

Finally, it will keep your hair looking sleek thanks to a protein called Alpha Keratin 60ku, which is identical to the keratin already found in your hair. Even if your hair isn’t as bouncy as it used to be, you can still use this shampoo to enhance your natural curl pattern because it’s designed for wavy, curly, and coily hair. Just take note that the Virtue Curl Shampoo is another option that has a potentially overpowering fruity scent. Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo is a game-changer when it comes to reviving your hair between washes. It absorbs excess oil, eliminates odor, and leaves your hair looking freshly washed, all without a trace of white residue. Biolage Volume Bloom Shampoo is inspired by the expanding cotton flower, delivering long-lasting, bouncy volume to fine hair.

Effective Shampoos for Straight Hair that Add Body and Shine

It removed product build-up brilliantly and smoothed frazzled ends, making it easier for our entire panel to detangle their manes. The formula didn't upset anyone's scalps, and it left strands feather-soft too. This pH-balancing shampoo banished product build-up and unwanted oil for nearly everyone, while the formula itself was irritation-free.

“It’s fortified with essential oils and vitamins that control oil production and nourish the scalp, making it ideal for those with oily hair,” he says. This invigorating cleanser is infused with salicylic acid and does a little more than relieve dandruff. A blend of sea minerals and white willow bark come together to revive hair from root to tip and enhance shine. And first, here are a few tips for finding the right balance between using these shampoos and keeping the oil levels in your scalp and hair in constant harmony. The formula includes vegetable-derived micro-exfoliators to physically remove dead skin cells and product buildup from the scalp. It not only sounds cool, it feels cool, too, thanks to the soothing tea tree oil, which pulls double duty to eliminate flakes.

When we switched up our shampoo, we found ourselves missing that tingling sensation and sqeaky-clean feeling. Hit the reset button on oily hair with this salon-quality shampoo from Paul Mitchell. The lightweight gel-like formula lathers up well and spreads nicely, making it easy to massage the suds into your scalp and ends. This detox shampoo lathers up nicely and rinses out easily, so you don't have to worry about that strong apple cider vinegar scent sticking around. We felt a difference in our hair texture immediately after washing it out; the length and ends of our hair felt super soft and clean. We found that using it twice per week really helped to limit the oily appearance of the scalp.

The Olaplex No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo has grown in popularity recently, and the hype is completely warranted. The shampoo, which is recommended by Giannetos, earned the top spot on our list because it repairs damaged hair and strengthens healthy hair at the same time. This makes it great for people with split ends as well as anyone who is just looking for a nourishing everyday shampoo. The formula uses a patented technology that works to strengthen each individual strand, ultimately making your hair stronger and healthier. Next, using your hair tools without adequately cleaning them contributes to oily hair.

People with oily hair think they need to shampoo more, but shampooing every day can actually create more oil, says celebrity hairstylist Dominick Pucciarello. "Exfoliating or treating this buildup helps return hair’s natural luster." For people with oily scalps, Claire encourages shampooing once every two days, which might take gradual waning from your once-a-day routine (she admits she’s seen clients who sometimes shampoo twice a day… oof). When shampooing, let the product set on your scalp for 3060 seconds unless otherwise instructed by the brand you’re using.

It’s also worth noting that because it’s so strong, Sunday Shampoo isn’t ideal for color-treated hair. L’Oréal Paris’ Elvive Extraordinary Clay Rebalancing Shampoo is our top pick for those with greasy hair on a tight budget. "The shampoo is lightweight and also doubles as a gentle clarifier and the conditioner then lightly replenishes any moisture loss," Stollmeyer says. "It balances the scalp and encourages fullness and volume throughout the hair." The Shop TODAY team rounded up the best shampoos by enlisting the recommendations of a board-certified dermatologist, trichologists and hair stylists. These experts also provided beneficial tips to help deal with all your hair-raising problems when it comes to managing an oily scalp.

If you’re using the tools over and over, they collect hair products and any oil that was on your hair at the time of use. Make sure to invest in proper care for your hot tools and ensure that they’re clean before using them. You might be doing everything right and still find yourself battling oily strands. Biolage Scalp Sync Cooling Mint Shampoo is a great choice for those looking to address excess oil, dandruff, and scalp debris while enjoying a soothing and cool sensation. You can use this shampoo to cleanse and follow up with Volume Bloom Conditioner to boost your hair's body and volume. To ensure your hair remains healthy and moisturized, it's recommended to follow up with a nourishing conditioner.

Harklinikken's stabilizing shampoo is a favorite of celebrity hairstylist Ashleigh Marie. Not only that, but this shampoo features moisture-boosting hyaluronic acid, strengthening plant-based protein, and rosemary leaf extract to support hair growth. Meerika Khanna, a certified trichologist and founder of Rthvi, says this shampoo is not only great for curly hair but also features ingredients to support hair growth — like rosemary leaf extract. All that said, Han recommends this budget-friendly shampoo because it contains more than one active ingredient to address dandruff and was named a top pick for those with oily scalps in our guide to the best dandruff shampoos. One is selenium sulfide, — this combats the overgrowth of Malassezia yeast, which is linked to the development of dandruff.

This shampoo is definitely made for those with thin hair who feel like they can never get their roots completely clean. The amount of product you get for the price makes this shampoo a tough sell for those with thicker hair types, but it may be worth it if it can help you go a few extra days without having to wash your hair. Plus, it gives your hair a gorgeous shine that lasts throughout the day, which means you can use fewer follicle-clogging hair products (like gels or hairsprays) to style your locks.

"I love you, it's ruining my life," Swift and Malone hypnotically harmonize as the song's repeated refrain. It is a reference to Swift's heartbreak ballad "The Story Of Us" from her 2010 album, "Speak Now." Moreover, from their labcoats seen in a behind-the-scenes photo Swift shared on Instagram, it appears Hawke and Charles are playing older versions of their "Dead Poets Society" characters. Longtime fans of Swift shouldn't be surprised; the record-breaking singer-songwriter has always hidden winks, callbacks, and thematic parallels in her songs and videos.

Try to find ways to manage stress, and strive for a well-balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables. While alopecia doesn’t typically affect your physical health, the emotional and psychological distress it can cause are very real. Hair loss, or alopecia, affects more than 80 percent of men and 50 percent of women, and the risk increases with age. Some small, limited studies have found that certain supplements and shampoos could be helpful, dermatologists say. However, your best bet if you’re suffering from hair loss is to see a board-certified dermatologist who can determine what’s causing your alopecia and then recommend a treatment plan. “As soon as you notice hair loss is happening, you should come in,” says Lauren Eckert Ploch, a dermatologist in Aiken, South Carolina. Feverfew, formerly Stag Hair Parlor, is one of those places that makes you feel instantly cooler the second you walk in. The low toxic, clean air salon is now located in Eagle Rock and provides some of the best layered cuts we've experienced.

A variety of treatments have been developed to help regrow hair and thicken existing hair on patients with alopecia, dermatologists say. Their effectiveness largely depends upon what type of alopecia you have and how quickly you start treatment. The most common cause of alopecia is an inherited condition called male- or female-pattern hair loss. Color swatches are global so it’s easy to edit and change the colors. The song served as the fourth single from that album and began getting promoted on April 19, 2011 — exactly 13 years ago, when Swift released "The Tortured Poets Department" and the "Fortnight" music video.

Taylor Swift released a new music video on Friday for "Fortnight," her collaboration with Post Malone, which serves as the opening track of her latest album, "The Tortured Poets Department." If you have healthy hair on the back or side of your head, a doctor can surgically remove hair strands from those areas and graft them into your scalp in a bare area. It’s another expensive treatment that isn’t generally covered by insurance, but it tends to be a long-lasting solution. We know you deserve only the very best—and Spoke & Weal is the place to provide it.

What makes alopecia worse?

While the dress doesn't exactly match the one Swift wore on the red carpet, it's possible that it is still a design from Schiaparelli, the fashion house behind the Grammy's dress. Like Swift's dress, the Schiaparelli gown Natasha Lyonne wore to the Golden Globes featured an exaggerated neckline. It’s usually genetic, but it can also be triggered by diseases or disorders that attack the hair follicles.

Here's a full breakdown of some details you might have missed in the music video for "Fortnight." Michelle Crouch is a contributing writer who has covered health and personal finance for some of the nation’s top consumer publications. Her work has appeared in Reader’s Digest, Real Simple, Prevention, The Washington Post and The New York Times. 12 Stylish and Contemporary Grunge Hairstyles

While the deaths of Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, and even Andrew Wood are regularly memorialized, eulogized, and otherwise mourned, many women vital to grunge met with sad, sometimes violent ends unheralded by the press. The result was the landmark album Louder Than Love, a grinding, riff-laden wall of noise that would pave the way for grunge's assault on the mainstream. Not only would Chris Cornell and company be grunge's first major label players, but they would also the genre's first act to chart, with Louder Than Love reaching number 108 on the Billboard Top 200 in 1990. Some of the coolest grunge styles include bleached hairstyles for men, which you can achieve by using the hair dye. Find a hairstylist who can suggest a grunge hairstyle that will suit your face shape.

A chic, more understated way to pay homage to the grunge hair era includes a high topknot and airy silver waves. A faded combo of blue and green remains on point when paired with a trendy half-up top knot. Wearing your hair in a half-updo does shows off the variation between the blue and green colors.

Much to the chagrin of the musicians who made grunge a phenomenon, the concept of grunge fashion became a huge part of marketing the music to America. Formed by Mr. Epp alumnus Mark Arm, guitarist Steve Turner, drummer Alex Vincent, and bassist Jeff Ament, the band released their debut EP Come on Down in 1985. Predating the band's appearance alongside early recordings by the Melvins and Soundgarden on the essential 1986 indie compilation Deep Six, Come On Down is considered by many to be the first grunge record. As the concept of grunge was increasingly used in the mainstream, it became increasingly rejected in anti-conformist Seattle. Grunge became a blanket term for Northwest bands of the ’80s and ’90s, even if they had completely different styles and sounds.

Style in waves for the colors to stand out and to it give a soft grunge look. I saw that dynamic up close in the mid-1990s when I worked as a music critic in New Jersey, spending time with Jon Bon Jovi and the band. As detailed on the website UDiscoverMusic, Soundgarden initially believed that they had made the best decision. The scene's cliquish sensibilities marked San Diego-born vocalist Eddie Vedder an outsider. Despite his powerful voice and solid songwriting skills, he often found himself in the shadow of Andrew Wood. Wood, the charismatic singer for Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam members Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard's previous band, died of a heroin overdose on the cusp of the band's major label debut.

A bit of product and a few hair accessories take the look from casual to formal in minutes. Rock your bob with black platform shoes, a chunky belt, and bold makeup if you want to go full-grunge. And, of course, your natural hair color, bright colors, or jet black will do the trick.

Section your hair so that you can work with about three inches worth of hair on each side of the face. A half-up top knot that had “feeder braids” at the base was another play on the Dutch/cornrow aesthetic. As feature-flattering as a baby bang can get, and paired with a sleek, on-trend long bob to boot. Maintain the brilliance of this color by adding TRESemmé Gloss Clear High Shine Deep Conditioner into your weekly routine.

Josh Homme had briefly played in Screaming Trees with off-and-on QOTSA member Mark Lanegan, before forming the group. Nirvana's Dave Grohl and Eleven's Alain Johannes have also provided notable contributions. Homme and Grohl joined with Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones to form the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures in 2009.

Chunky strips give this otherwise simple white lob even more personality. The striped off-white look enhances the grunginess of the hairstyle. A color like this leans into the gray trend without being a totally gray look. If confidence is your true face shape (without any smoke and mirrors via waves or layers) was a hallmark of success, then the hair-tucking ’90s kids had it all figured out. Surprisingly low-maintenance given its short length, the lip-level bob epitomized the relaxed, casual aesthetic of the decade.

Unusually difficult to tame, frizz can easily be worked into a grunge look by letting your frizz flag fly. Let those curly locks flow and don’t worry about taming that frizz. Who doesn’t want to throw it back to the original princess with some awesome space buns? This hairstyle was very commonly seen in the ’90s in many different forms. Straight on top of your head, low in the back of your head, or somewhere in between all make this style eye-catching and beautiful.

Add some unkempt, side-swept bangs for that effortless, almost “careless” touch only rockstars can perfect. If you want a hairstyle that is very 90s grunge but still has a touch of modern beauty to it, try adding lots of messy layers to your hair. This adds texture and body to your tresses, but also pays homage to the grunge subculture of the 90s. It looks especially carefree and rockstar-like if you add a wispy full fringe to the hairdo. While grunge music had a lot of serious and sometimes disturbing undertones, the looks and styles that came out of the times should be played with to suit whatever you’re looking for.

Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden: 50 Best Grunge Albums

You can go for a bob haircut or any short haircut as per your choice, and yet it will look mesmerizing. That’s because, whether the bands liked the term or not, grunge was a movement. In less than a decade, Nirvana and a handful of bands from the Seattle area had crawled out of obscurity and commandeered pop culture, rebuilding it in their own image. Their music was a hybrid of hard rock, metal and punk (with a sprinkle of Neil Young here and there), which gave them a wide enough swath of flannel for each band to have its own unique snarl. Soon, bands from all over the world were getting widespread recognition after years of duking it out on indie labels. But within a few years of reaching critical mass, it all seemed to fade away quickly, as nu-metal became rock’s shiny new object.

The '90s Grunge Aesthetic is Back—Here's How to Wear It in 2023

Add on highlights or a hair colour of your choice to make it appear bold and sassy. The grunge look emerged in the mid-80s in Seattle, Washington via grunge bands – a post-punk subgenre of alternative rock. Anti-capitalist musicians wore thrift store clothing, took loads of drugs and ignored mainstream culture, thus inadvertently creating a whole new look which went against the mainstream image of the time.

The Long Wavy Enigma: Soft Grunge with Highlights

You don’t have to have any kind of super lengthy hair to get a classic grunge look. Short haircuts can work great with a grunge style, in a variety of different ways. We think this look works so well with red and black hair—classic rock and grunge colors. Then, put your hair in a very loose high bun—so loose that some of your locks naturally fall to frame your face.

Soundgarden, ‘Superunknown’ (

You can flip your head over and shake your hair with your fingers for a naturally messy look before putting your hair in a braid or ponytail. You might also consider getting a haircut with lots of blunt layers for that unkempt, carefree vibe. This beautiful blend of turquoise, violet, and blue tones goes from mermaid to grunge in seconds when styled with some messy curls and a bit of volume. Remember to protect your color-treated hair from styling damage with some heat protectant spray. The most prevalent myth of grunge music is that it killed off '80s hair metal. For all their unsung triumph, the women of grunge also faced largely unsung tragedy.

Mullet Hairstyle:

The jagged cut is the ultimate bang for those trying to embrace the grunge lifestyle. Similar to the mullet, this edgy style allows you to rock multiple trends at once. A dull finish was a prized look back in the day, giving rise to the popularity of paste and wax in addition to salt spray. Texturizing sprays, like Suave Dry Texture Finishing Spray, easily recreate this grungy tousle, no problem. Although fans and journalists argue for such moments as Kurt Cobain's suicide or Soundgarden's breakup in 1997 as grunge's definitive end, the truth is that no specific event marked the genre's death. As documented by Rolling Stone in a 2019 article commemorating the reissue of their catalog, no band is as integral to grunge as Green River.

Whether it’s in the form of baggy cargo shackets or khaki coveralls, utility wear is a practical yet cool way to experiment with the grunge trend. The more layers the better, so don’t be afraid to throw your favorite coat on to complete the look. If you’re ready to embrace the grunge trend and add a little edge to your wardrobe in a way that won’t feel too on the nose, scroll ahead for six grunge outfits with a 2021 twist. Kurt Cobain loved oval sunglasses, so add a bit of whimsy to your grunge look with a pair of your own.

Spiked, Jagged Pixie Cut

Not only is this haircut super simple and full of texture, but it also keeps its shape and style just fine if you’re forced to go a day or two without washing your hair. Another great idea is putting in smaller space buns but leaving the rest of your hair straight. This idea works better if you place the space buns on the top of the head. You can also make this work look a little like cat ears if you prefer.

The side part adds an edgy asymmetry, while the straight hair unstyled gives a nod to the DIY ethos of grunge. Silver is the new black in the grunge palette, and this long hair straight style with a metallic sheen is proof. It’s the long hair with bangs that’s been reimagined for the modern grunge enthusiast.

Choppy Bob a la Joan Jett

Healthy hair will work with you instead of against you and make it much easier to conquer things such as side braids and straight bangs. Ani DiFranco was super interesting in the ’90s in a million different ways, and definitely not the least of which being her choppy short hair and messy style that fit perfectly with the times. She loved to mix things up a lot, and her photos from the past provide a ton of inspiration for grunge-inspired looks.

People loved to glam up in dark, bold, offbeat, rock-style looks and head to the nearest rock concert. To get a grungy  braids, just tease your hair at the roots for more volume and, if you don’t have bangs, part it in the middle. Tie your hair in two low pigtails, then roll each pigtail in a messy bun and fix it in place with some bobby pins – you can go for low pigtail buns or side buns. You can also leave one strand of hair loose on each side for extra grunginess. If you love the unkempt 90’s grunge hairstyle, read on to see how to get it for yourself. The sheer number of hairstyles (five!) that Urszula demonstrates in this under-three-minute video attests to how accessible these looks can be.

This look keeps your hair out of your face without having to worry about achieving a perfectly smooth base.

Or cut the hair all one length and sweep it straight back from your forehead, capturing a Bowie-esque look. In a highly recognized photo from the times, Gwen Stefani wears this type of bangs in her platinum blonde hair with some darker streaks throughout and it looks amazing. Grunge-style bangs can work with any type, color, or length of hair, and can work very well on most face shapes with small variations in length depending on the shape of the face.

They've even got a few tables outside if you want to bring your furry friend with ya to lunch. Highly recommend giving this unassuming spot a try if you've never been here before. Poke Bowl Recipes

The still-popular Hawaiian fish dish poke is still going strong in Austin. Traditionally, poke features raw ahi tuna, soy sauce, sesame oil, sesame seeds, and onions as the usual suspects. Then there are the fusion formats, from burritos to nachos to poke atop fried tofu skins.

Eater Austin

New to poke and unsure where to start? However, the payoff can be big for those willing to take a risk and build their own bowls at many fast-casual spots like Poke House, Pokeatery, and Poke Austin. There are also higher-end options at Mongers, and guacamole ones at Kemuri.

Restaurant

Poke House, a family-owned restaurant based in Austin, proudly serves up fresh, speedy, and mouthwatering poke since 2017. Our mission at Poke House is straightforward – offering fantastic, freshly prepared poke bowls at affordable prices. Sunset Valley’s casual poke spot is prepared with signature bowls with plenty of fish, snow crab scallops, and more. There’s a second location on East Fifth; takeout orders can be placed online. There are tofu- and veggie-based options as well.

Ahi Poke

Then there are, yes, hot Cheetos-dusted burritos at Poke House. The raw bar at both locations of the New American restaurant (the other up in North Shoal Creek) serves up a tuna poke made with taro chips. Kemuri's Texas-Japanese take on poke is the guacapoke, where the tuna is paired with avocado, wasabi, and pickled red onions.

Eater Austin main menu

Another casual poke spot, this time in the St. Johns neighborhood. Epic’s offerings include customizable or signature bowls with bases (including sweet potato noodles); proteins like ahi tuna, spicy salmon, or shrimp; and all sorts of vegetables. The Rosedale location of the seafood restaurant offers up an array of poke bowls, including the maguro with bluefin tuna, California with snow crab, and the Scottish with salmon. Massaged kale tossed in house made shoyu vinaigrette with onion, mac nuts, avocado, carrots, sesame seeds.

It includes pickled fresno peppers, yuzu citrus, rice noodles and a side of shrimp chips. I've eaten Poke all over town and find this place to have my favorite selections and at the best price. Although often inconsistent in how pokeritos and bowls are often made, serious mistakes are rare. Even when lines are long, I can usually get in and out pretty fast. The workers share their playlists over the speakers and always make for a great environment.

For more fish, check out Austin’s best seafood restaurants, spots with oysters, and sushi places. I absolutely love the staff and their recommendations. The food is always amazing and fresh. Personally I have a hard time trusting poke restaurants but you can GUARANTEE freshness here. The staff are diligent with changing the protein section!

There are two other locations too, one on Brodie Lane and the other in Hancock. Among the Austin-area mini-chain’s poke offerings (rice bowls and salads) is the poke burrito which can be made covered in Cheetos dust. You’ll find the yellowfin tuna poke bowl on the brunch, lunch, and dinner menus at South Congress Hotel’s Californian cafe.

TransJakarta, the bus system serving greater Jakarta, Indonesia, undertook a four-year expansion of its network in 2016, tripling its routes and doubling the number of buses in operation. Realizing the value of data from that expansion, they also improved fare collection infrastructure to better enforce how passengers use fare cards to tap in and tap out of buses, resulting in a 40% increase in the passenger tap out rate. There are many reasons that deter people from using public transportation — from safety, to cleanliness, to the difficulty of navigating stations. Through simple, creative, and thoughtful design solutions, these issues can be overcome to provide a quality rider experience. Using design to help find solutions to increasing ridership and pride in our public transportation networks is imperative in getting our future cities right — and is all the more important as the world’s population continues to migrate to our urban centers.

Within 2021, we’ve replaced more than 40% of our fleet, ensuring our drivers a comfortable in the best equipment possible. Designs for the station furnishings required a balance between the demands of this high use/high abuse environment and the desire for a simple, minimal, clean, and modern design aesthetic. A singular form, material, and finish for the furnishings, along with common placement within each station, creates a coherent design narrative across the system. The floors are poured-in-place epoxy terrazzo that is charcoal-colored and combined with pieces of white marble and mother of pearl. The dark colored terrazzo is intended to help conceal stains and create a visual contrast with the lighter colored walls and ceilings, helping assist visually impaired travelers in managing their movement through the station. At the same time, the marble and mother of pearl give the terrazzo a visual texture that not only assists in masking stains but raises the light reflectance of the flooring and creates visual interest.

The researchers believe this case study demonstrates the potential role of data-driven urban transport network design in planning thriving cities around the world. Grants seek to “reconnect” communities cut off in the past by transportation infrastructure, leaving such neighborhoods in many cases bereft of direct access to schools, jobs, medical offices and places of worship. All elements attach to the floor with a minimal number of contact points to clean around them more easily, create greater visibility for safety and security, and for fewer patch points when equipment is moved. A stainless-steel material with brushed finish was chosen for most of the amenities not only for durability, but also for a clean, modern aesthetic. The walls and ceilings use preformed metal panel systems, providing the opportunity to conceal conduits and other infrastructure elements. The suspended ceiling panels allow for light fixtures, speakers, and similar devices to be fully integrated and flush with the perforated ceiling panel.

As the transportation landscape continues to evolve, design thinking will remain crucial in fostering innovative and human-centered solutions. By empathizing with users, harnessing emerging technologies, and promoting collaboration, transportation experts can unlock the full potential of design thinking to shape the future of mobility. This article explores the diverse applications of design thinking in transportation through ten inspiring examples.
